THE FOUNDING OF A REPUBLIC

Photobucket

Director: Huang Jianxin, Han Sanping

Date of release: 2009

Genre: Drama/History

The Founding of a Republic is a Chinese historical film commissioned by China's film regulator and made by the state-owned China Film Group (CFG) to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. The film was directed by Huang Jianxin and China Film Group head Han Sanping.

Although the film premiered on September 17, 2009 in mainland China, it has yet to receive publicity in Taiwan. It has been described as "propaganda" for the Communist Party. While the Taiwan government has asserted that it has no plans to actively censor the film, it will not be released until next year at earliest because Taiwan's annual quota of 10 mainland films has already been reached.

The film retells the tale of the Communist ascendancy and triumph, and has a star-studded cast including Andy Lau, Ge You, Hu Jun, Leon Lai, Zhang Ziyi, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and directors Jiang Wen, Chen Kaige and John Woo, many of whom make cameo appearances so brief they could be easily missed; the leading roles are played by actors equally renowned in China, such as Tang Guoqiang and Zhang Guoli, but they are less well-known internationally. A CFG spokesman said many stars answered Han Sanping's call to appear in the film, and waived their fee. Thus, the movie kept to its modest budget of 60–70 million yuan (US$8.8–$10 million). According to the executive at one of China's top multiplex chains, the film unusually marries "the core of an 'ethically inspiring' film with commercial packaging."

PRINCESS RETURNING PEARL II

Photobucket

Creator: Qiong Yao

Date of release: 1999

Genre: Action/Comedy/Drama/Romance

Returning Princess Pearl also known in the Philippines as My Fair Princess) is a television-adaptation of Qiong Yao's novel-series of the same name. It stars Zhao Wei, Ruby Lin, Alec Su, and Zhou Jie and is a joint-production between Taiwan and Mainland China. Because of the heavy comic elements present in the first two seasons of the series, the show can be classified as a dramedy (although the second season carries a more serious plot). Fans may often abbreviate this series as "HZGG".
The legend of Princess Huanzhu of the Qing dynasty and the reign of Emperor Qianlong served as the initial inspiration for the author, acclaimed Taiwanese romance writer Qiong Yao. Although some of the characters and the premise of the plot are based on real historical events and figures, considerable artistic license was employed and the series is largely fictional.
Due to its immense popularity, this series propelled its four main leads to super stardom in eastern Asia . The first season debutted in 1998, it had a successful run becoming a region-wide phenomenon, winning over legions of fans. A second season was first broadcast in 1999 and a third in 2003. It is popular in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia. Indonesia and even Thailand. In fact, the second season broke China's TV record with the highest ratings ever, achieving almost 50% viewership in all local TV stations.
The third season saw the show suffer a backlash in popularity, partly because most of the original cast, including the main characters, had been replaced with different actors and actresses. Zhou Jie was the only principal actor from the original series who remained.

OLD HOUSE HAS JOY

Photobucket

Director: Jianguo Lai

Release date: 1999

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance

Old House Has Joy is a story about the love between Ji Xiang and Xiao Peng. After some obstacles, the couple finally manages to be together, only to realise that Ji Xiang is Xiao Peng's cousin, therefore making them relatives and unable to wed. Running alongside is the story of the couple's Grandparents, with Alec and Vicki taking the roles of that love couple. The series has many great Alec and Vicki moments (as it intended to), but lacks a depthful storyline. Filmed at the same time as Huan Zhu Ge Ge II, Old House Has Joy was mainly intended to further the popularity of the Alec Su, Vicki Zhao pairing, which it did fantastically.

MY DREAM GIRL

Photobucket

Director: Wai Man Yip

Date of release: 2003

Genre: Comedy/Romance

Ekin Cheng stars as Joe Lam, a Hong Kong lady-killer who prides himself on his amoral swindling and generally annoying ways. Unemployed for nine months, he's lived off his girlfriend (Bernice Liu), who in fact is seeing some guy named Tim (Mark Lui) on the side. Still, despite the fact that he's an overconfident, irresponsible lout, she can't break his heart, and refuses to break up with him—for now. Luckily, Joe finds a job that requires him to split town for a good three months, meaning she and Tim can play around as much as they like. Joe's headed to Shanghai to work for Mr. Cheung (Richard Ng) as an image consultant. Never mind that Joe has zero experience; he's obviously much more capable than the other choice, a chef played by Cheung Tat-Ming. Thanks to his stylish head of hair and generally decent way with fashion, Joe has his meal ticket.
However, Joe's main assignment is a bit more difficult than just color-coordination. He's assigned to make Cheung's long-lost daughter Ning (Vicki Zhao) into a presentable family member for Cheung's upper-class society functions. But Joe puts on a power play, and states that Ning is beyond help, because she has no manners, unkempt hair and apparently no bathing habits. The goal of such an act: a tripling of his salary. You'd think that a guy with no actual credentials and zero experience wouldn't be able to get his way, but Joe gets the increased salary, as well as cart blanche with a credit card. It helps that Joe runs into Ning before his interview, and she's immediately smitten by him, thereby putting her in his corner for continued employment. It also helps that Cheung's number two is a Hong Kong expatriate (Vincent Kok) who desires to make Hong Kong people look good—even when they're into vile chicanery like Joe. And, it helps that Joe is played by Ekin Cheng. With his dashing good looks and boyishly suave charm, wouldn't anyone—man or woman—fall for his wacky schemes?

GREEN TEA

Photobucket

Director: Zhang Yuan

Release date: 2003

Genre: Drama/Romance

A conservative Beijing graduate student name Wu Fang (Zhao Wei) goes on a series of blind dates. Sensitive to slights and the advances of the men, she often becomes offended and leaves halfway through the dates, though sometimes it is the men who leave first, annoyed by her behavior. On one date she meets Chen Minglian (Jiang Wen), whose fiancee had recently left him after having an affair with another man. Their initial date is an unmitigated disaster. Mingliang discusses her fortune-telling friend who Mingliang scoffs at, and Wu Fang walks out when Mingliang asks her how many previous boyfriends she has had. When he chases after her suggesting that they get a room in the local hotel, she slaps him and takes a taxi to get away from him. However, Mingliang pursues Fang who, while initially resistant, agrees to go on additional dates with Mingliang.
During these dates, Fang begins to relate the tale of her friend's parents. The mother was a cosmetic artist for the dead in a funeral home, a fact that she had kept secret from her husband. When the father finally discovered the truth, he went nearly mad and descended into alcoholism. According to Fang, the father would drink to excess and beat both his wife and his daughter, often claiming that the wife's hands (and her profession) had destroyed his life. Over the course of several of their dates, Fang tells Mingliang that the mother eventually killed the father accidentally while resisting one of his attacks and was imprisoned for ten years. At times Fang suggests that she has made the story up, though Mingliang seems to remain entranced by the tale.
At the same time, Mingliang's artist friend Jun has been trying to set him up with a sultry lounge singer in a club. The singer, named Lang Lang (also Zhao Wei) bears a striking resemblance to Wu Fang but dresses far more provocatively and has no trouble with men. Mingliang tries to get Lang Lang to admit she is Fang, but eventually settles into the idea that she is a different woman. The two share several conversations where they discuss life and love, though Mingliang remains enraptured by the graduate student rather than the lounge singer. Finally Wu Fang agrees to become Mingliang's girlfriend. But when Jun has a dinner party planned, Wu Fang is nowhere to be found. Mingliang asks Lang Lang to pose as his girlfriend for just the night. During dinner, Lang Lang reads the fortune of Jun's girlfriend, revealing her to be shallow and manipulative. When the girlfriend gets too drunk, Jun slaps her. Lang Lang walks up to Jun and slaps him in return, telling him she hates men who strike women (something she shares with Wu Fang).
The film ends ambiguously. Laughing, Mingliang takes Lang Lang and they get a hotel room. At the same time, a conversation where Mingliang explains why he likes Fang is replayed on the soundtrack.
