THE FOUNDING OF A REPUBLIC

Photobucket

Director: Huang Jianxin, Han Sanping

Date of release: 2009

Genre: Drama/History

The Founding of a Republic is a Chinese historical film commissioned by China's film regulator and made by the state-owned China Film Group (CFG) to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. The film was directed by Huang Jianxin and China Film Group head Han Sanping.

Although the film premiered on September 17, 2009 in mainland China, it has yet to receive publicity in Taiwan. It has been described as "propaganda" for the Communist Party. While the Taiwan government has asserted that it has no plans to actively censor the film, it will not be released until next year at earliest because Taiwan's annual quota of 10 mainland films has already been reached.

The film retells the tale of the Communist ascendancy and triumph, and has a star-studded cast including Andy Lau, Ge You, Hu Jun, Leon Lai, Zhang Ziyi, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and directors Jiang Wen, Chen Kaige and John Woo, many of whom make cameo appearances so brief they could be easily missed; the leading roles are played by actors equally renowned in China, such as Tang Guoqiang and Zhang Guoli, but they are less well-known internationally. A CFG spokesman said many stars answered Han Sanping's call to appear in the film, and waived their fee. Thus, the movie kept to its modest budget of 60–70 million yuan (US$8.8–$10 million). According to the executive at one of China's top multiplex chains, the film unusually marries "the core of an 'ethically inspiring' film with commercial packaging."

PRINCESS RETURNING PEARL II

Photobucket

Creator: Qiong Yao

Date of release: 1999

Genre: Action/Comedy/Drama/Romance

Returning Princess Pearl also known in the Philippines as My Fair Princess) is a television-adaptation of Qiong Yao's novel-series of the same name. It stars Zhao Wei, Ruby Lin, Alec Su, and Zhou Jie and is a joint-production between Taiwan and Mainland China. Because of the heavy comic elements present in the first two seasons of the series, the show can be classified as a dramedy (although the second season carries a more serious plot). Fans may often abbreviate this series as "HZGG".
The legend of Princess Huanzhu of the Qing dynasty and the reign of Emperor Qianlong served as the initial inspiration for the author, acclaimed Taiwanese romance writer Qiong Yao. Although some of the characters and the premise of the plot are based on real historical events and figures, considerable artistic license was employed and the series is largely fictional.
Due to its immense popularity, this series propelled its four main leads to super stardom in eastern Asia . The first season debutted in 1998, it had a successful run becoming a region-wide phenomenon, winning over legions of fans. A second season was first broadcast in 1999 and a third in 2003. It is popular in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia. Indonesia and even Thailand. In fact, the second season broke China's TV record with the highest ratings ever, achieving almost 50% viewership in all local TV stations.
The third season saw the show suffer a backlash in popularity, partly because most of the original cast, including the main characters, had been replaced with different actors and actresses. Zhou Jie was the only principal actor from the original series who remained.

OLD HOUSE HAS JOY

Photobucket

Director: Jianguo Lai

Release date: 1999

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance

Old House Has Joy is a story about the love between Ji Xiang and Xiao Peng. After some obstacles, the couple finally manages to be together, only to realise that Ji Xiang is Xiao Peng's cousin, therefore making them relatives and unable to wed. Running alongside is the story of the couple's Grandparents, with Alec and Vicki taking the roles of that love couple. The series has many great Alec and Vicki moments (as it intended to), but lacks a depthful storyline. Filmed at the same time as Huan Zhu Ge Ge II, Old House Has Joy was mainly intended to further the popularity of the Alec Su, Vicki Zhao pairing, which it did fantastically.
